Coffee pods and capsules: what are the main differences?

In the end it is always about coffee, but in reality capsules and pods are different for many reasons. From the wrapping to the grinding to reach the consistency, both the capsules and the pods differ in:

  • aesthetics. The pod is a paper filter that allows the passage of water and the mixture in the preparation of coffee. The capsule is a small container made of aluminum or plastic resistant to high temperatures, the coffee of which is extracted from the machine after drilling the casing;
  • conservation. The coffee pods to preserve aroma and perfume are sealed inside a wrapping of the same material used for the packaging of mocha coffee. The packaging preserves the coffee in the pod, unlike the capsule which keeps the 7 grams of coffee contained inside vacuum-packed (and until the moment of consumption);
  • the amount. While the pods generally contain 7 g. of blend, the coffee capsules can contain smaller quantities, depending on the type of machine being used;
  • operation. The pod coffee machine is equipped with an extractable arm inside which the pod is placed. The blend is filtered by the system that produces the desired quantity of coffee (long or espresso). The capsule is instead pierced by the machine through a set of "needles" which extract the mixture and then convey it inside the cup.

If coffee pods and capsules can differ for several reasons, on balance both guarantee a Neapolitan espresso of excellent quality. The coffee machine also allows you to preset the quantity of blend, obtaining a narrow coffee with a concentrated and strong flavor, or a so-called "long" coffee, which is lighter.
